U.S. ETFs get Bigger and Bigger

Total U.S. ETF assets crossed $900 billion for the first time Wednesday, led by the roughly $80 billion parked in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (AMEX:SPY). Next largest is SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:GLD) with nearly $55 billion in assets, followed by iShares Emerging Markets (NYSE:EEM) with $45 billion.

The market took off in February of this year, and shares of market ETFs soared, including SPDR Trust, Series 1 (NYSE:SPY), Diamonds Trust, Series 1 (ETF) (NYSE:DIA) and PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 (ETF) (NASDAQ:QQQQ).  But as often happens all good things come to an end.

According to one analyst, you should save up your pennies and maybe even take out a home equity loan to buy into the broad market after the upcoming crash predicted for April.

The most active stocks traded today were the usual suspects we've seen for months on end, the winner was Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C), followed by the SPDR Trust, Series 1 (NYSE:SPY) and in third was Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC).

The Congressional Budget Office says the deficit will reach $1.3T in 2010.  They also claim economic growth will remain 'muted' for the next few years.  That could be tough for investors in broad market ETFs like SPDR Trust, Series 1 (NYSE:SPY), Diamonds Trust, Series 1 (ETF) (NYSE:DIA) and PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 (ETF) (NASDAQ:QQQQ).
